Christy Kane
New Orleans, LA
Author, photographer, artist, musician and clothing designer Christy Kane has just added moviemaker to the list.

Long obsessed with the whimsical side of traditional fairy tales, Kane focuses her creative energies on the wacky and wonderful world of her three muses, Lily, Callililly and Polly. A dynamic and ambitious artist, Kane keeps the girls busy. As of October 2007, Callalilly will be a movie star.

Lilly, Callalilly and Polly are handmade dolls that now pinion Kane's art, but it wasn't always the case. Always influenced by the unusual, Kane, who graduated from New York University Tisch School of Art with a degree in Fine Art Photography in 1996, hand made props, costumes, and used various specialty photographic film products to make the subjects in her photographs appear otherworldly. During this same period she started to write stories and poetry and would use her photos to illustrate them. But something was missing.

As Kane's stories evolved, it became increasingly obvious that her human subjects were not rendering the feel she wanted to convey. She wanted to create a more imaginative world while still using photography as her medium, so she began to make dolls. Lily was the first, followed by Callalilly, and then Polly. After photographing the dolls and thinking about their relationship to each other, she realized that they were indeed Sisters and that is how she discovered the missing link. Thus the Sisters Kane were born.

Kane has been handcrafting and photographing her dolls ever since, and has exhibited her photographs, and original one-of-a-kind dolls at numerous galleries in New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans and Austin, Texas. Her first book about the dolls, Tales of the Sisters Kane, was published in October of 2006 by Baby Tattoo Publications.

By now, the dolls' ambitious streak took on a life of its own. In June of 2007 Kane joined forces with the Chiodo Brothers and New Image Media to animate one of the tales from her book with live puppetry. Directed by Stephen Chiodo (Killer Klowns from Outer Space, Vincent, Team America and Elf), Callalilly is a glimpse into the world of the Sisters Kane, a world where only dolls exist and valuable lessons are learned.

Kane's enchanting artwork, stories and movies are perfect for children with a sense of adventure as well as adults who, deep down, still believe in Peter Pan. And fans of Hillaire Belloc's "Cautionary Tales", the Brothers Grimm, ETA Hoffmann, Tim Burton, Edward Gorey and Gris Grimley will have no trouble adding Christy Kane to the list. Christy Kane's Tale of Callililly, already an official selection at this year's Newport Beach Film Festival, is due for general release in October. Tales of the Sisters Kane is available now at all good booksellers.

Daniel Elson
Columbus, OH
Having an inexplicable distaste for the commercial and trite autobiographical verbiage, where the author continually refers to the subject as though they're different entities, that are self promoting at best and self-deprecating at worst, withstanding, it is as such:

Residing in Ohio, Daniel Elson is currently working for Columbus College of Art and Design and as a full-time artist. His work can be seen in galleries and on the History Channel's "Surviving History." He likes it quiet.

Elizabeth McGrath
Hollywood, CA
Influenced by a Roman Catholic upbringing, punk rock, Erte, and Edward Gorey, Hollywood native Elizabeth McGrath is one of her generation's more unique and prolific artists. She creates in a number of mediums and materials with undeniable artistry and imagination. Her paintings are haunted whispers of color, depicting subtly dangerous creatures that creep towards the edge of the canvas. Her stitched and bandaged dolls and toys are a united army of soft strangeness and her mixed media dioramas are isolated freak shows displaying rotting subhuman figures luxuriously for your pleasure of contempt.

Emily Beaulieu
Marina Del Ray, CA

Emily has animated on the movie Alvin And The Chipmunks, and the DVD series Veggie Tales. Her plush have been in Haute Doll magazine, and her photographs have been used by Valley of the Dolls and Re-Ment for their promotional materials. Jennybird Alcantara
San Francisco, CA
My work has at its core a narrative; I like to explore the complex interconnectedness of opposites as seen through the prism of myth, fable and fantasy. I use the symbolism of duality to explore the connection of life and death, as well as the relationship between the beauty and cruelness of nature, that of the natural world as well as human and animal nature. The anthropomorphic qualities in my characters show the relationship of the central figure to the world she inhabits.

Jonathan & Valerie Nicklow
Evergreen, CO
Jonathan and Valerie Nicklow both grew up outside of Washington, D.C., spending their early years at all of the national museums and art galleries. Jonathan attended Savannah College of Art & Design receiving a B.F.A. in painting. Valerie attended the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore where she received a B.F.A. in general sculpture studies. They have participated in numerous national gallery and museum shows and outdoor art festivals across the country receiving many honors including several best of show awards. Lana Crooks - Crooked Art
Chicago, IL
Lana Crooks spent her formative years in South Florida. During high school she was deemed most likely to become a pirate and began as a result to amass a seaworthy crew. That crew sailed to Savannah and attended the Savannah College of Art and Design. Lana pilfered herself a BFA in Illustration in twenty ought two. One day, on a whim, she made an expedition to Chicago and made it home, trading the ocean for a giant lake. Originally an illustrator, Captain Crooks eventually took to sewing and began work as a freelance costume designer. In what seems like a natural progression, plush became her main focus in 2007 with her Octoplush series; a series based on her love of cephalopods. Her work has been seen at the likes of Get Knifed Gallery, A.Okay Official, DVA, Rotofugi and Gallery 1988. She has also worked with other artists to create crazy collaborations.

Mike and Jodi Maas
Tempe, AZ
Somewhere in the Arizona desert a serious abstract artiste and a lowbrow hack collaborate to make plush. Mike makes cave drawingesque "patterns" and manning a fussy vintage sewing machine, Jodi magically transforms them into something closely resembling the original idea. Now long-in-the-tooth, the bitter couple relies on their few surviving brain cells to remember the skills they've gleaned from 20+ years working in the commercial and fine art fields, many of which are incorporated into the final creation.

Morninglori - Lori Brown
Cincinnati, OH
Lori Brown is a self taught artist born and raised in a small, rural, town about an hour outside of Cincinnati. As a little girl she spent her days playing in the woods, scribbling on whatever was convenient and assmembling little figures from anything she could get her hands on. Some things never change...she still heads for the woods every chance she gets and, while her methods are more refined, she is still just scribbling pictures and crafting little characters. Her current breadth of work includes plush creatures, paper pulp sculptures, acrylic paintings and digitally colored ink drawings. She now resides in a cozy house in Cincinnati with her husband, two kitties and the newest love of her life, Master Sebastian Huxley Brown, an ever-so-slightly-spoiled Toy Fox Terrier.

Her current work explores the idea of creatures from other worlds. This is fueled by the mystery of the forest and her affection for science fiction and fantasy literature.

Shawnimals
Chicago, IL
Shawn Smith was born in Joliet, IL in 1975. Back then he was interested in G.I. Joe, Kermit the Frog, drawing pictures and playing video games. In fact, he still is! Shawn started Shawnimals after becoming disenchanted with the droves of sketchbooks he had lying around, with characters that may not have been used otherwise. "Why not make plush versions of these simple-shaped characters?"

Shawn's quick history: He worked at Electronic Gaming Monthly magazine from 1995 - 2000 as a video game and gaming hardware reviewer. He decided to go back to school to study art. It was there Shawnimals were born - in a town called Normal, IL.

Shawn is interested in all areas of art, but is currently most interested in character-based art in its many forms (plush, drawings, vinyl, etc).

The Soreheads
West Hollywood, CA
A "Sorehead" is defined as "one who is peevish or disgruntled or one who is easily offended, annoyed or angered," so it is no surprise that the characters that became "The Soreheads" were born as an expression of the pent-up aggravations of life: Parking tickets, road rage, traffic, inflation, ignorance, control freaks and the annoyance of being forced to comply with pointless rules, sparked the lives of personalities who could speak artist Vanessa Matthews' suppressed language. Matthews' early paintings and drawings on napkins and post-it notes were ultimately brought to life with her business partner Nancy Mancini as soft sculptures known as "The Soreheads."

Matthews and Mancini, both having said goodbye to former careers in the film & television industries, left for Austin, Texas armed with drawings of the characters and worked tirelessly to see the 2D illustrations spring into 3D in the form of 5 individual plush personalities. Matthews and Mancini then designed over one hundred one-of-a-kind Soreheads plush individually in their Los Angeles studio, scouring downtown warehouses and vintage stores for the most unique materials to render the handmade creations to life. The Soreheads inaugural exhibit saw the 100 plus plush suspended from 30 foot ceilings and featured two life-size plushies including a 4 foot Evil Cupcake and 7 foot Heartboy, as well as paintings of the characters on wood.

The Soreheads cast of characters includes Heart Boy, Sad Girl, Little Man, Bag Head and Evil Cupcake. Each character has a story that parlays his or her particular grievances about the world we live in. Heartboy doesn't want you to see how vulnerable he feels, so he won't let anyone get too close. His heart has been ripped out too many times to count. Sad Girl plays Guitar Hero and is looking for happiness. Little Man is a germaphobe who is tired of being pushed around. Baghead is feeling so low, he wants to disappear, so he sits in the dark and listens to techno music, trying to drown out his sorrows. Evil Cupcake's power has corrupted him, and he is on a quest to fatten up hapless people everywhere.

The Soreheads are currently held in the private collections of Hollywood celebrities, as well as museum curators from the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles and the American Museum of Natural History in New York. A lifesize plush Sorehead is currently on exhibit alongside "Just Love Me" at Royal/T, a concept art space housing the contemporary art collection of Susan Hancock.

The Soreheads plush dolls and paintings were on display at various exhibits and shows throughout 2008, including the solo exhibition, "Dissociate", at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica, "Kawaii Eyes" at Royal-T in Culver City, "Where the Wild Art is" at the Wonderful World of Art Gallery in Culver City, the Annual "Skip the Mall Exhibit" with Black Market/Black Maria and the "Stuff this Show" exhibit at Rivet Gallery in Columbus, Ohio. A solo show is slated for January 2009 at the Black Maria Gallery and Under the Table in Los Angeles as well as at various galleries in New York City. The Soreheads will make their television debut on MTV's upcoming season of "The Real World: Brooklyn."

Tragic Stitches
Columbus, OH
It all started with the need to have a rag doll to hug, but not just any dolly would do. She had to be spooky, and she had to be cute, and she had to share some of my gothic style. When I could not find just what I was looking for, I made my own. My very first doll was well received, and soon I had requests for more. I have always loved creating, so I started to do just that, and soon gave my budding business a name, *Tragic Stitches*, because I believe my dolls are just that, Tragically Beautiful. I have been sewing since I was a little girl when my grandmother taught me. My grandmother is a quilter and primitive artist who is pretty well known in our home town. She was my first inspiration and continues to inspire me every day. I love to create and cannot stop sewing ever.

Tragic Stitches Creations is gothic folk art inspired Rag Dolls, Plush Bunnies, Bats, Demons, and other oddities. They all one day wish to find a new home where they can be cherished. All the Tragic Stitches Creatures are quite odd and they all have their own personalities. Don't hold it against them. These Creatures are made from many materials, hand stitched and stuffed. Each creature is unique. They are designed to be floppy, soft and cuddly folk art plushies, and so there is no wire inside them. They are meant to be displayed, but keeping them on your bed or toting them around once in a while should be fine too.
