Emma Overman was born in Sete Lagoas, Brazil and raised in Union City, Tennessee. She graduated from Hanover College in 1997 and completed the Post Baccalaureate program at Maryland Institute College of Art a year later. Now living in Indianapolis, Emma divides her time between illustration, mural painting, and her own independent projects. She has illustrated four picture books and given over 80 school presentations on the illustration process.
Because of her history in children's book illustration, Emma is often asked if all of her work is intended to be for children. The reality is that when working independently, she rarely considers any audience other than herself. The dominant theme that runs through her work is that it's about childhood. She loves all the curiosities of childhood, the sense of wonder from experiencing something for the first time, and how the world seems to change from year to year. She has an appreciation for anything that is part sweet and part sad, like the frail and fleeting nature of youth. Emma often works on layered glass to express this sense of delicacy. Recently she has begun pouring resin over paintings. She feels the candy-like shell enhances the colors beneath, making the image more tempting. Simultaneously, it creates a barrier, so the image feels more distant. Her work is inspired by children's literature, stop-motion animation, and the It's a Small World ride. She finds greater influence, however, in the most unlikely of places and at the most unlikely moments.

Growing up in a family that moved around from place to place, Jeannie spent many hours a day doodling while watching cartoons and day-dreaming. It is largely because of this, that she turned into somewhat of an introvert that continues to spend too much time doing all of the above-mentioned things. She is a self-taught artist who combines watercolor, charcoal, pastel and ink to form richly textured illustrations of thoughtful monsters and peculiar creatures. In 2006 she established "Obsolete World" as a place her various creations could call home. She is a big fan of philosophy mixed with humor, and strives to convey hope and introspection, as well as curiosity in her work.
Jeannie credits her inspiration to music, books, animation, her enormous old Alaskan Malamute (Atticus), larger muppets, puddles on the sidewalk and people eating alone in restaurants. Her work can be found in shops and galleries throughout the country. She has collaborated with her good friend/musician Matthew Cooper of Eluvium on several projects in the past seven years and is currently working on a book of short stories entitled "Mysterious Species Conservation".
