As a sculptor, character designer, and animator I try to infuse my soft sculptures with the same dimension and life as I would any of my other work.

I am a multidisciplinary artist but I primarily make dolls. The only reason I can figure I make art in this form is because I loved playing with dolls when I was growing up. Nothing has ever been more enjoyable. I was small and the world I played in was even smaller so I could control everything. With that much control I could do anything with my dolls - their world was only ever made of possibilities and subsequently so was mine. Anything I dreamed of doing my dolls could do - put on plays, anchor news programs, and go to far away places.
When I got too old to play with dolls I started making them. As I grew my capabilities grew and so did my possibilities. The construction of my dolls became as much a construction of myself as anything else. The more skills I learned, the more I tried and did, the more I was transformed. I got to a point through my dolls where I had no limits.
Well, almost. As I keep growing I realize there are actually lots of limits and part of the building of myself and my dolls is learning how to create possibilities in spite of them. When I started making dolls in eighth grade I didn't really think that I would still be doing it ten years later. Sometimes it seems like the last thing I should be doing when the demands of life get so overwhelming but I am persistent and I do it anyway. Almost as if the more hostile life gets the more I retreat to what I enjoy and know so I can get back some of that peace and control I felt when I was little.
The Cutting Board Club comes from drawings my partner, Daniel Torrente, did in high school. Growing up in the rural south he filled in his world by drawing it. The Cutting Board Girls were part girls he knew and part ones he wished he did. They were girls who made him think. Some were beautiful others verged on grotesque but they were all so carefully and thoroughly self crafted that through them he saw how much a person could transform and modify themselves.
He became one of them. Well, not a girl, but you get what I mean. He was so distinct, so malleable that when I met him he was the closest thing to a living doll I had ever come across. His Cutting Board Girls were so similarly unique and stylish they were the dolls I always wished I had and the dolls I wanted to make.
When Daniel first told me years ago that I was the most magnificent Cutting Board Girl he had ever met I had no idea what he was talking about. I didn't look or feel like what I thought a Cutting Board Girl should be but that's because I didn't understand what they really were. It wasn't until I realized the full scope of my creative ability that I understood what he was talking about. It isn't limited to fabric and clay but includes the way in which I transform what life gives me. I am as much on the cutting board in the way I shape myself and my life as my dolls are.
Being a part of The Cutting Board Club is realizing that we are all powerful and creative. Not just with art supplies but in everything we do. Ourselves and the world are always on the cutting board being shaped by every thought and action. It is our goal to be thoughtful and meticulous about how we craft ourselves and our thoughts and actions because those are the things that shape the world.
